Plan your next step
Ask your plan about the medicine and its purpose
Use the exact product name and the condition being treated when you ask about payment.
Your plan calls its list of medicines that may qualify for payment a formulary. Prior authorization means the person prescribing asks your insurance plan to approve payment before the plan will cover the medicine. Ask the plan what paperwork is needed and who will send it.
For Medicare, the purpose can change the route
A weight-related medicine prescribed for a different accepted purpose, such as diabetes, may qualify for Medicare drug coverage as of September 26, 2026.
That does not promise payment under a particular plan.
GLP-1 medicines affect appetite and blood sugar. Ozempic contains semaglutide, as does Wegovy; Mounjaro contains tirzepatide, as does Zepbound. The use, for managing weight or treating type 2 diabetes, depends on the product. Ask your plan or pharmacist whether a medicine you have taken belongs to this group.
A temporary program and its eligibility and payment limits
The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge gives eligible people access to certain weight-loss medicines at a $50 monthly copay, their share, as of September 26, 2026.
The program begins July 1, 2026 and runs outside Medicare’s usual drug benefit, Part D, through December 31, 2027.
Eligibility is narrower than the price headline
Bridge eligibility as of September 26, 2026 begins at age 18; a person’s weight, health conditions and Medicare plan type also affect whether they qualify.
This program excludes people who have type 2 diabetes; they follow the usual path for drug coverage.
A GLP-1 medicine covered by your Part D drug plan in 2026 means you cannot use the Bridge in 2026.
The copay has limits of its own
Part D’s out-of-pocket limit caps your own spending each year on the medicines your drug plan covers.
Under Bridge terms recorded September 26, 2026, its $50 copay does not count toward the yearly Part D out-of-pocket limit.
Paying through the Bridge leaves your progress toward that limit unchanged.
The program gives no extra payment help for low incomes, and coupons cannot be added to its claims.
Get an answer tied to your plan
Ask the plan to name the coverage rule, any paperwork needed, and the amount you would owe. Keep the answer and the date with your notes.
